UREC’s Lock & Key Program Helps Baton Rouge Families Become Homeowners
For April Wynn, homeownership once felt out of reach. As a single mother of two, financial barriers made the dream seem distant. However, with UREC’s Lock & Key Homebuyers Club, along with support from Louisiana Housing Corporation (LHC) and Red River Bank, she found the guidance and resources to make it a reality.
April describes UREC’s Lock Key Homebuyers Club program as “absolutely wonderful,” and she built her confidence with each class. “No question went unanswered,” she said. “Industry professionals provided an insider’s view of the process, making it both informative and engaging.” She highly recommends the program, not just for first-time buyers but for anyone navigating homeownership.
Despite initial challenges in qualifying for assistance, April said LHC and Red River Bank didn’t give up on her. “They went above and beyond to make me a homeowner,” she said.
A key figure in her journey was Tara Flugence, her loan officer at Red River Bank. April calls her a “guardian angel” who made the process smooth despite the ups and downs. “She gave me the freedom to control my outcomes while making sure I never felt alone. She told me, “‘You will be in your house by Christmas.’” She made that happen.”
Now settled in her new home, April cherishes moments like watching her children play in the backyard and cozying up by the fireplace. “I can’t wait to add my personal touch, but, for now, I’m just soaking it all in.”
Reflecting on her journey, April offers this advice: “Make sure you have the right team to make this a process you WANT to remember.” She also credits her realtor, Andre Seghers, for his patience and unwavering support.
Homeownership still feels surreal, but for April, this milestone is more than just a house—it’s a fresh start. “I’m doing my best to just enjoy the fruit of my labor… one day at a time.”
