UREC Announces 2019 Cohort for Pre-Law Institute in Partnership with Southern University Law Center

Baton Rouge, Louisiana – Urban Restoration Enhancement Corporation’s (UREC) College and Career Ready Initiative, in partnership with Southern University Law Center (SULC), is pleased to announce the 2019 cohort for UREC’s College & Career Ready Pre-Law Institute.

The 2019 Pre-Law Institute scholars are:

  • Jacoby Coleman
  • Jesuyia Farlow
  • Chelsea Johnson
  • Blair Parker
  • Ayanna Washington
  • Cesar Williams
  • Jayda Woods
  • Jailen Wright

The annual Pre-Law Institute follows a 14-week curriculum modified from the Education Development Center’s Law and Justice Program, which introduces students to civics, law, and the criminal justice system, while affording them the opportunity to study under instructors who are law students at SULC. Scholars also gain practical experience during the program, which includes studying at the SULC, facilitating a mock-trial at the law center’s state-of-the-art moot court and networking with Baton Rouge attorneys and judges.

Prior pre-law alumni were named to American Bar Association’s Civic & Law Honor Roll (see here) and have exercised their pre-law advocacy skills in the U.S. capitol (see here).

UREC Youth Program Director Kathryn Robinson said: “The legal arena offers promising careers for future professionals, and we are committed to exposing youth to college and career opportunities that will prepare them for this field. We are honored to continue our partnership with Southern University Law Center as the host site. This opportunity acclimates students to law in an actual academic and professional environment, which is consistent with our objectives.”

Southern University Law Center Chancellor John Pierre said: “The Southern University Law center is proud to collaborate with Urban Restoration Enhancement Corporation to provide transformative educational opportunities for high school students through the Pre-Law Institute. The Pre-Law Institute experience is one of the most important and impactful educational experiences that a high school student could have.”
