Urban Restoration Enhancement Corporation (UREC) is hiring Academic Tutors for our Youth Programs. Academic Tutors will report to UREC’s Program Director in order to provide tutoring support to program participants while ensuring a safe, orderly, welcoming and encouraging environment for them. He or she must have a minimum of one year post-secondary academics and must demonstrate a mastery of the academic area (e.g., Algebra, Algebra II, Geometry, English, Writing, General Sciences) which he or she is designated to tutor. A background check will be required.
Job Summary
Essential Functions:
- Tutor students individually and/or in groups in varied academic areas
- Integrate study and learning strategies in tutoring sessions to promote independent learning and preparation for post-secondary education
- Mentor students in the areas of academics and college preparation, modeling and promoting good habits and behaviors
- Meet with UREC Program Director to plan appropriate academic supports for students
- Maintain accurate and timely records of student contact and maintain confidentiality
- Handle day to day situations that come up during tutoring sessions and inform UREC Program Director of any academic or disciplinary problems that impede tutorial progress
- Work collaboratively with all site personnel
- Ensure safe dismissal of students upon completion of program activities
Minimum Experience, Education, and Licensure:
- Previous tutoring, mentoring and/or leadership experience is preferred
- Demonstrate above-average ability in college-prep high school academic areas (e.g., Algebra, Algebra II, Geometry, English, Writing, General Sciences)
Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Must have excellent writing, oral and interpersonal communication skills
- Establish rapport quickly and communicate well with students from varied backgrounds, high school age groups and skill levels
- Communicate well with both site personnel and parents, maintaining confidentiality where appropriate
- Demonstrate strong behavior management and problem-solving skills
- Must be flexible, patient, attentive, and responsible when dealing with students
- Must be dependable, honest, and mature
Salary:
$15/hour
Hours:
Mondays through Wednesdays from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at Southern University’s College of Business
